Steven Tyler Will Not Tour Again, Says Former Guns N’ Roses Drummer Matt Sorum By Tyler Jenke

Legendary Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler is unlikely to return to full-scale touring, according to former Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum. Despite recent live performances, Sorum confirmed that the pressures of a global tour would be too demanding for the 77-year-old rock icon.

Steven Tyler’s Recent Return to the Stage

Tyler recently performed at his sixth annual Jam for Janie Grammy Awards Viewing Party, marking only his second live performance since a vocal injury in 2023 halted Aerosmith’s Peace Out tour. The event featured collaborations with Extreme’s Nuno Bettencourt, Mick Fleetwood, Lainey Wilson, Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes, Jessie J, and Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton.

Although fans were thrilled to see Tyler back on stage, Sorum, who served as Musical Director for the event, clarified that a full-scale Aerosmith tour is off the table. Speaking to Joe Rock of Long Island radio station WBAB (via Blabbermouth), Sorum explained, “Steven cannot put himself under the rigors of doing a full worldwide tour because there’s a lot of pressure.”

Why Steven Tyler Won’t Tour Again

Sorum detailed Tyler’s struggle with maintaining vocal perfection, stating that the singer’s dedication to authenticity prevents him from relying on pre-recorded tracks or lowering song keys. “He’s a perfectionist,” Sorum said. “If he doesn’t sing correctly, it bothers him. And he’s not gonna put it on tape, like 80% of the people out there. That’s just who he is.”

At 77, Tyler’s vocal health remains a priority. In 2023, he fractured his larynx during a performance in Elmont, NY, forcing Aerosmith to cancel their remaining tour dates. The band formally announced their retirement from touring in August 2024.

Future Possibilities for Aerosmith and Tyler

While Sorum confirmed Tyler won’t embark on a major tour, he hinted at the possibility of occasional short performances. “I talked to him about it multiple times,” he said. “I said, ‘Just sing four or five songs tops.’ He says, ‘I can do that.’”

Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton also weighed in on the band’s future, telling Boston’s WBUR in January, “Maybe Aerosmith will do something in the future, but it’s a big if. The last thing I want to do is push Steven in that direction. If we do anything, it would come from him.”

While a full Aerosmith reunion remains uncertain, fans can still appreciate Tyler’s legendary contributions to rock history. His recent performance showcased his unwavering passion for music, even if large-scale tours are no longer an option.
